About this Product

What is a "PortaSlid"?

A while back, we turned the past tense verb "slid" into a proper noun when referring to our combination sleeve and lid product [40050] which we made for our full-size boards, hence "SLID." So we figured we'd just add the prefix "Porta" to this one to suggest that it is more portable than the larger version. Clever (and lazy), no?

The PortaSlid can serve as a sleeve to keep the beads on your portable board away from curious kitty paws, or as sleeve to house one board with work on it, or two empty boards or, using a couple of SLIDs, serve as a stackable storage system to keep several portable boards clean and organized. Lastly, and most awesome-ly, this is a component of our portable beading systems, namely our PortaBeader [40054], PortaSeeder [40055], and PortaBracelet [40056] which allow you to transport your IN-PROGRESS layouts to and from home without losing your place!

The PortaSlid is made of high-quality plywood that has been laser-etched with a pretty floral design that you may paint or stain, if you wish. (You can always flip it to the "plain jane" side, too.) And it comes with a Gauge to help with the gluing to ensure that the front opening maintains the proper dimension. (Again, see John's aforementioned video.)

Also, using the included Key Tabs, the PortaSlid will stack securely either on top of other PortaSlids or on top of any full-size SLIDs which you may already have. Win, win!

The PortaSlid is designed to be used with any of our compact, 9 x 15 inch boards (our PortaBeader [40009], PortaSeeder [40010], PortaBracelet [40013] or even our Child's Board [40005]) to organize your work or, when used in combination with yet a 3rd piece, our PortaSaver [40053], to make not just your board, but your work-in-progress beadwork truly portable and keep it pretty much right where you left off!

Assembled dimensions: 9-5/8" x 16-1/4" x 2-1/2"

IMPORTANT:

This product will come to you as an unfinished kit, which not only saves you money but gives you the flexibility to finish it in a way that best suits your taste. (You'll need glue. We use E6000. Allow 24 hours for the glue to fully cure.) The pieces are cut using a laser, which essentially cuts by burning, so there may be some "flaring" and charring, and perhaps some soot on the back sides which can either be blown off, erased, brushed, or carefully sanded away. Also, please note that our natural wood veneer products may vary in species, color and grain direction. If you plan to stain, we recommend doing so before gluing, observing the stain manufacturer's recommended conditions and time to dry. If you intend to paint the entire piece, inside and out, we recommend doing so after assembly. This way the glue will adhere to the wood fibers, instead of the glue which may eventually lose adhesion. Again, please see our videos.

ATTENTION:

If you bead on the go, be sure to check out our PortaBeader System, [40054], of which this item and two others are a part. If you buy them together, you'll only be charged one shipping charge, instead of three, because we can fit them all into one box, resulting in fantastic savings!

Also, please see Laurie's PortaSlid video on our Acclaim Crafts YouTube Channel where she demonstrates the usefulness of our portable beading systems, as well as John's PortaSlid Assembly video where he shows you how to glue this thing together.

FAQs

  1. Can I save on shipping if I buy more than one item?
    • Yes! First, you won't see any discount at check-out, but will receive it by way of a refund before we ship. Also, you must buy everything at the same time and ship to the same address.
    • We calculate your refund by subtracting from what you paid what it actually costs to combine and ship your order in as few packages as is safely possible.
  2. Do you customize or personalize?
    • The short answer is, "No, we do not."
    • We do, however, listen to suggestions and will sometimes incorporate them into future designs if we feel that doing so would benefit a substantial number of beaders. Just drop us a convo!
    • We are truly sorry if our current designs don't suit your needs or taste, and hope that you will return periodically to see if we have made anything new that will.
  3. Do you haggle, discount, or donate?
    • In short, no.
    • Why?  Our offerings are painstakingly hand-crafted while being continuously inspected along the way. We are not a company as most folks would generally define one, but a semi-retired husband and wife team who works out of our basement. Considering what we charge, and after deducting production time, materials, and overhead - not to mention social media, photography, editing, equipment maintenance, telephone calls, etc. - we consider ourselves blessed when we manage to pull in even close to what we were paid by our previous employers.
  4. Why don't you bums offer free shipping?
    • Just as we have no intention of insulting your intelligence by trying to convince you of the existence of Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, or the Easter Bunny, we'll not suggest to you that shipping is somehow magically "free." While some sellers raise their prices to present such a fantasy, we believe you will want us to keep prices as low as possible. Besides, if we hid the cost of shipping within our pricing, we'd have to charge the same shipping price to everyone, meaning that people who live close to us would have to pay more than is fair in order to subsidize those who live farther away. Here's a bit of wisdom for those who have never heard it: "There is no such thing as 'free.' "
  5. Do you ship internationally?
    • Nope.  We tried it for a while, but shipping charges were almost putting our dear, fellow beaders into cardiac arrest, and many would blame US!  We try very hard to offer near wholesale prices, and surely don't want a reputation for being unfairly expensive. So, until our collective governments pull their heads out on fair trade, we have decided to discontinue international shipping for the foreseeable future.
  6. OMG, shipping is, like, SO expensive! Why don't you (x, y, or z)?
    • We have done much research to ensure that our shipping is the fairest available anywhere which includes tracking and insurance. If you think you can do better, please let us know, specifically.
    • The packaging we use come either from us or the USPS. We will use whichever gets your purchase to you the safest and at the least cost.
    • For more info, please see our first FAQ, entitled "Can I save on shipping if I buy more than one item?"
  7. How do I care for my new board?
    • The best thing to do to your board is nothing at all. Generally, if you're comfortable, so will your board be, i.e., not too hot, cold, humid, no defenestration, etc. The only caveat is that your board doesn't like to bathe or take showers, so don't get it wet. Maybe use a soft brush, or some spit-free air to blow out the divots. Look at it this way... Although we invest a great deal of time into making our boards serve as individual works of art, they're also tools. Dirt, scratches, nicks, etc., are badges of honor - signs of usage and (hopefully) prosperity. Just use the thing and display it with pride, no matter its condition.
    • But, if you simply must keep it pristine, then have it framed and hang it on the wall; we'd be honored! :-)
  8. You're out of stock on X, and I'll simply DIE without it! When will you have more? WHEN???
    1. Short Answer: ASAP!
    2. Long Answer: ASAP! Generally, jewelry items are forever gone once they're gone. Our beading boards, however, will be replenished anywhere from within a few hours to several days, depending on which 90 hours each of us chooses to work that week. We're a small husband and wife shop, and do the best we can, so please be patient and don't hold it against us if we choose to sleep occasionally. If you convo us, we can give you a rough idea of when X will be back in stock. But, if you just can't wait, you might want to consider calling a shrink.
  9. Who sneezed on my board? (It snot what you think!)
    • The darker-colored spots which you may find in the carved areas of your new board(s) are present in varying degrees from manufacturer to manufacturer and from lot to lot. With wood being a natural product, we expect these are bits of bark or knots that have been blended in with the wood pulp.
    • We're honestly not trying to pass off flaws as features, but, rather than finding them unsightly, we think of them as "beauty marks," because each board can be uniquely identified by their quantity and placement, as on a living thing.
    • We hope you appreciate our boards' raw individuality, versus our trying to hide their imperfections with paint or something. Besides, these markings are useful in beading groups to tell apart otherwise identical twins!

John and Laurie have been making and selling their products for some time, and it shows. They have a huge selection of bead boards of the highest quality, not to mention jewelry displays. Packaging was extremely well done, and I can’t imagine anything they send out ever getting damaged. Plus excellent communication every step of the way. In short, top notch sellers with the best products and service anyone could possibly want. HIGHLY recommended!
