These chandelier type earrings are made of Ethiopian opal and tanzanite beads hanging from 14K yellow gold-filled wire. They measure about 2.5" in length. Please read "the wear and care of opals" below. This is very important. Your opals will last a lifetime if you properly care for them.
Opals are known for shimmers and sparkles of color, and Ethiopian opals are the most incredible examples. They are very new to the gem world, discovered in 2008 in the northeastern part of Ethiopia, and are mostly translucent with brilliant play-of-color unlike any other opal. There's always large, bright flashes of every color in the rainbow from every angle, not just tiny sparkles.
Opal is the birthstone of October. It is also the national gemstone of Australia. I have a good inventory of opals; if you're interested in another size, shape, or type of opal jewelry, contact me.

***WEAR AND CARE OF OPALS: Ethiopian opals are very fragile and porous, and very susceptible to scratches. They will absorb oils from your skin and chemicals such as perfume and lotions that will cause the opal to cloud and discolor over time. Keep these tips in mind: put it on the outside of clothing if possible (if not, make sure the setting comes between your skin and the stone), try not to let the stone itself touch the skin, and make it the last thing on and first thing off when dressing. Opals are best kept out of extended sunlight and vast temperature changes. Mild soap and water are safe to wash opals in, and a soft polishing cloth is helpful. Protect your opals and they will last a lifetime!
Tanzanite is an incredible blue/purple variety of zoisite discovered by accident in northern Tanzania in 1967, and is a single-source gemstone found only in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is quite a unique stone and one of my favorites because of its strong and distinctive trichroism, meaning flashes of three colors (blue, purple, and red) are visible in the stone at different angles. As incredible as the color is, it actually starts out as a brownish crystal before being heated to its blue hues. It has been said to have been given to women following the birth of their first child as a symbol of new beginnings, and as a symbol of motherhood.
Tanzanite is also a newly-minted birthstone of December, as of 2002, joining turquoise and zircon. It's the first stone to be added to the birthstone list since 1912.
