About this Product

This listing Gives you a choice of 3 earrings made with lustrous Edison pearls and faceted blue angelite. All are made using 14K white, yellow, or rose gold-filled wire. The pearls measure a whopping 13 mm, the angelite beads measure 8 mm, and the earrings as a whole measure 1 3/4" in total length. These are impressive.
Contact me for any other Edison pearl jewelry, or a matching pendant for the earrings.

Angelite is blue anhydrite, a mineral that, when exposed to water, turns to gypsum. Gypsum has many industrial uses, but a fine quality gypsum is called alabaster, commonly used for sculptures worldwide for millennia.

Pearls are one of the most beloved gems, used for millennia in jewelry and decoration, and are the only gems grown inside a living organism. The first recorded mention of pearls is 7,500 years old. They are one of a few organic gemstones, including ivory, amber, and coral.

Edison pearls are cultured in China from a species of giant freshwater pearls with exotic colors and quality of a saltwater pearl. There are mainly two different types of farmed pearls: tissue nucleated and bead nucleated. Most freshwater pearls are nucleated by pearl mantle tissue, which forms a solid nacre pearl, but are often off-round and oval- or potato-shaped. Edison cultured pearls are nucleated with round beads, like saltwater pearls, and produce the highly desired round shape with a smooth surface. Only one pearl is cultured in each mussel, allowing for a much larger sized pearl to grow inside the shell. They have a bright luster and come in vivid colors such as white, peach, pink, gold, bronze, plum, and purple. Their sizes vary but they measure on average 11-16 mm, and they have a unique luster that can be compared with that of high-end saltwater pearls such as Tahitian or South Sea pearls. Traditional freshwater pearls rarely produce pearls in such large sizes. Their name comes from a quote from Thomas Edison to Kokichi Mikimoto, the Japanese entrepreneur who is credited with creating the first cultured pearl: "There are two things which couldn't be made at my laboratory--diamonds and pearls. It is one of the wonders of the world that you were able to culture pearls."

Pearls are one of the birthstones of June, along with color-changing alexandrite, and moonstone. It is also the 3rd and 30th wedding anniversary gem.
