Tanzanite is an incredible blue/purple variety of zoisite discovered by accident in northern Tanzania in 1967, and is a single-source gemstone found only in the foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is quite a unique stone and one of my favorites because of its strong and distinctive trichroism, meaning flashes of three colors (blue, purple, and red) are visible in the stone at different angles. As incredible as the color is, it actually starts out as a brownish crystal before being heated to its blue hues. It has been said to have been given to women following the birth of their first child as a symbol of new beginnings, and as a symbol of motherhood.

Tanzanite is also a newly-minted birthstone of December, as of 2002, joining turquoise and zircon. It's the first stone to be added to the birthstone list since 1912.

Chrome diopside is a rich green stone mined primarily in northern Siberia, Russia, though there are minor low-quality sources around the world. It's occasionally referred to as "Russian Emerald" as well. The gems in these earrings are from the Russian mines, which only operate 2-3 months of the year because of the long and harsh winter conditions of Siberia. It seems funny that a gem saturated with an intense and vibrant shade of the color of life is primarily found in a land frozen over for most of the year! Chrome diopside is the most true, pure green gem you can find, especially since it isn't treated.

Chrome diopside is a stone of Pisces.

The use of garnets as gemstones dates back thousands of years, used by Egyptian pharaohs, ancient Greeks and Romans in jewelry. It is even said that Noah used a garnet lantern to light the way for his ark. Garnet is known as the traveler's stone, having been carried as a talisman for protection and to light the traveler's path. There are over twenty varieties of garnets, but six types are used for gemstones: pyrope, almandite, spessartite, grossularite, andradite, and uvarovite.

Rhodolite garnet is a violet-red shade of pyrope garnet from Macon County, North Carolina, though it is now also produced in Africa, India, and Sri Lanka. It's name comes from the Greek for "rose".

Garnet is the birthstone of January, and comes in every color. It is also the zodiacal stone of Aquarius and is the 2nd anniversary stone. It is the state gemstone of Connecticut and New York, and star garnet is the gemstone of Idaho.
