About this Product
This ceramic dish is a version of the traditional Japanese sesame grinder, a 'suribachi' bowl -- or grater, the 'gomasuri' bowl. It is used to grind sesame and other seeds. A wooden pestle is included. It can also be used to grate ginger, garlic and hard cheeses. The three holes can be used to strip leaves from herb stems. It is a handy, time saving, but also pretty, kitchen utensil.
The bowl is multipurpose. Noodles or greens can be heaped on top of the crushed, grated and/or stripped herbs and mixed for a single serving meal in the bowl.
It is thrown on a potter's wheel. The dish is glazed stoneware. It is 5-1/2 inches in width. The height is 2 3/4-inches. The pestle is 6-inches in length. It is dishwasher and microwave safe. The glazes are food safe. My daughter, Amy, drew the art which was made into a food safe ceramic print and fired onto the surface of the glaze.

Meet the Maker
I am a third generation artist--my grandfather, mother, aunts, brother and my daughter are all artists. I taught art for several years. Now I am a full-time maker. I earned an MFA degree with a major in ceramics. I also have a mother/daughter shop (the original RetroRamics) on Etsy.
How it’s Made
Stoneware clay is thrown on a potter's wheel. It is trimmed, dried and bisque fired. The piece is glazed and fired again to a higher temperature.
